Objectives: The purpose of this study is to investigate the efficacy of an electroacupuncture at interosseous muscle for patients with chronic stroke.
Methods: Electroacupuncture theraphy at interosseous muscle applied to five hemiplegic patients who had been treated by general rehabilitation therapy after stroke for 2 weeks. The other five hemiplegic patients had only general rehabilitation therapy during same period. Outcomes were assessed by Medical research council scale, Jebsen-Taylor Hand Function Test, Action Research Action Test (ARA), grip power, modified Barthel index(MBI).
Results: The patients exhibited substantial improvements on the ARA, motor grade of wrist flexion, grip power but Jebsen-Taylor Hand Function Test, MBI has not significantly meaningful differences between sample and control group.
Conclusions: Electroacupuncture at interosseous muscle may be an efficacious method of improving function and use of the affected arms of patients after stroke.
